A common question whenever a PT sits down for a consultation with a prospective client.
I always have the same answer.
Yes – but I’m not going to show them to you. Here’s why:
If I’m going to rely on photos of my clients’ progress to sell myself, realistically I’m only going to show you the top 5% who have had the most impressive results aren’t I? I’m not going to show you someone who's struggled, as in that instance what you see is going to be the deciding factor in if you choose to work with me.
The truth is the reason there’s a top 5% of results in the first place is the also the reason I won’t show them to you. Everyone responds differently. Some people are respond really quick to diet changes and training stimulus', and some people don't. Everyone responds, just at different rates.
If I show you the client who’s had the best results then they become your target, your expectation and the standard. When the truth is they were already set-up to respond better than any of my other clients. This could be genetics, it could be the situation they came to me from, it could be their approach, it could be anything.
At that point, we’ve already set an unrealistic expectation. This then is going to get you down on yourself once we start training and you don’t achieve the same results. No matter how perfect we have your diet, how intensely we attack your training, you most likely won’t achieve that.BECAUSE YOU'RE A DIFFERENT PERSON. The results I get with one client have no impact whatsoever on the potential results I'll get with you.
Then, 1 of 2 things happen.
You start to ignore what I’m telling you. You cut your calories lower than I’ve said, start adding in extra sessions, start taking ‘fat burners’ and who knows what else.
You blame me. You tell 4 or 5 of your friends how bad a trainer I am so despite the fact I’ve got you the results you were looking for before showing you those photos, I’m now a ‘bad’ trainer because we haven't achieved what I managed with that other client.
Neither of these are good for either of us.
So, what do I do instead?
I work with you. You buy your block booking. But with that you get the option to stop at any point and get the rest of those sessions you’ve bought refunded. Even with a block booking you have no obligation at any point to continue to train with me. I’ll let you judge me on the results we get you, while actually fitting within YOUR lifestyle.
